| A Memory Check for Americans - Monday, September 06, 2010 Question: If we observe Labor Day by not working, should we observe Memorial Day by forgetting our history, the Fourth of July by being anti-American, and Christmas by becoming nonbelievers? Oh wait, we already are. A Memory Check for Americans David C. Stolinsky, MD Upgrading the memory of a computer can improve performance dramatically. So can upgrading the memory of a nation. But before you upgrade the memory of a computer, it is best to check what memory you have. To do this you can download simple software. My purpose here is to do the same thing for our national memory. Test your memory:

Auditioning for “American Idol.” d. Saving 2,700 people (but not themselves) on 9/11. Answer: (d). Rick Rescorla, chief of security for Morgan Stanley, safely evacuated all 2,700 employees on 9/11, except for six. Four of the six were himself and his three deputies (two pictured above): Wesley Mercer, Jorge Velasquez and Godwin Forde. That’s true multiculturalism. Rick was last seen going back into Tower 2 shortly before its collapse. When he was told he should get out, he replied, “As soon as I make sure everyone else is out.” His body was never recovered. He was a hero in Vietnam − prophetically, his photo is on the cover of “We Were Soldiers Once, and Young.” He was a hero again on 9/11. Answer: (d). President Obama is bowing to King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia, who is theoretically his equal, not his superior. Heads of state do not bow to other heads of state. Just as the American flag is dipped to no one, American presidents bow to no one. At least they didn’t in the past. Miss Manners book of etiquette states, “One does not bow or curtsy to a foreign monarch, because the gesture symbolizes recognition of her power over her subjects.” Miss Manners has that exactly right. ●

Jesus help me. Are you ready? Let’s roll! Answer: (d). Todd Beamer was a passenger on United Flight 93. The film “United 93” shows only a small part of his heroism on 9/11. But it was verified by the telephone supervisor with whom he spoke. They recited the Lord’s Prayer together, then he said his timeless words. He played a key role in the passengers’ revolt against the terrorists. As a result, the airliner crashed into a field in Pennsylvania, and not into the Capitol Building or the White House, thereby saving many lives. ●

Spill his soup at a White House dinner. d. Twice mispronounce corpsman as “corpse-man.” Answer: (d). One need not be familiar with the military, which President Obama plainly is not, to know that corps is not pronounced “corpse.” I believe I learned this in grammar school, but apparently they do not teach it at Columbia University or Harvard Law School. Reading from a teleprompter, as is his habit, the president twice mispronounced Navy corpsman as “corpse-man.” This is especially hurtful, because corpsmen are the Navy version of medics. They risk their lives to prevent Navy and Marine personnel from becoming corpses. This episode raises two questions: First, how alienated from the armed services can a man be, and still function as commander-in-chief? Second, how much of what the president reads from a teleprompter is processed by his brain, and how much simply emerges from his mouth without being processed? That is, who is really speaking? ● How did you do on this mini-test? How is your memory functioning? But regardless of how well it is functioning, I believe we can agree that the nation could benefit from a memory upgrade.
