Sheep Nation

When we say that Americans and others are acting sheeplike, we mean that they passively follow government orders on masking, social distancing, school closures, church closures, lockdowns, and whatever else they are told. But being sheeplike does not mean only apathy and docility.

Sheep have only two speeds − graze and stampede.
− Lt. Col. Dave Grossman, soldier, psychologist

Being sheeplike also implies a tendency to overreact and stampede at the first sign of danger. The reason sheep are so easily led, and misled, is both apathy and timidity. Americans were not known for either apathy or timidity. On the contrary, they were known for individuality, brashness, and resistance to authority, especially unreasonable authority. The same was true for Aussies and some Western Europeans.

Times have changed. No, we have changed. Depending on what the government-media-complex tells us today, we graze or stampede. And we obey. What else can we do? We’re just sheep. It’s all we know.
