Russians were used to obeying the czar, so it was natural for them to obey Stalin. Germans were used to obeying der Kaiser, so it was natural for them to obey der Führer.
What’s our excuse? Only a generation ago, Americans had the reputation for being individualistic and rebellious, like our Founders. What changed in our upbringing and education to produce servile, subservient subjects? Can it be changed back again? Maybe, if we try. But that’s a big if. The first step is to recognize that the purpose of an educational system should be to produce responsible citizens, not obedient subjects.
