The Nazis used two words for removing all Jews: judenfrei meant free of Jews, but judenrein meant cleansed of Jews, as if they were some form of contamination.

I do not know what term the Taliban use, but they need one. The last Jew has left Afghanistan, where Jews have been for centuries, perhaps since Alexander the Great. The last Jew is headed for New York, like so many refugees before him, including my mother’s family.

Now we wait to see how long it will be before the last Christian leaves Afghanistan. Jews are like the canary in the coal mine – the first to die, but never the last. So much for trusting the Taliban to do anything other than what they do so well, be absolute tyrants, misogynists, and bigots. Now there’s a legacy to be proud of!
