Theory, entirely unsubstantiated: Pope dislikes NATO because it was founded to keep communist Soviet Union from ingesting rest of Europe. Russia is no longer communist but still is expansionist and undemocratic. So leftists retain a warm feeling for it, and antipathy for NATO.
