When Lee surrendered to Grant, ending our Civil War, Grant had his staff take off their hats out of respect. He said, “Given time I may befriend a man I’ve beaten, but not a man I’ve humiliated.” We took pains to bring our nation together, even naming Army posts after Confederates. Now they rename Ft. Bragg Ft. Liberty. And what, exactly, will that accomplish, except to alienate Southerners, who make up so many of our best troops? But perhaps that is the motive.
