The title is taken from “Fire on the Mountain,” a song by Rob Thomas. It is regrettably relevant today. Nextdoor.com tells us that a US Postal Service mail carrier was robbed at gunpoint on a major street in Los Angeles.
Only a few years ago, if you messed with the US Mail, US Postal Inspectors would show up carrying short-barrel shotguns. I know, I saw one. He was quite impressive. Or rather, his shotgun was. But now we risk lockjaw from yawning too broadly. Violent crime, even if it affects government agents, has become a matter of indifference. I don’t recognize this place anymore.
I’m really homesick. Anyone know how I can get back to America?
