Blocking The Doors To Classrooms Won’t Make War The Least Bit Prettier.

• In 1933, Germany named Hitler chancellor (prime minister). The Nazis gained a plurality of votes, not quite a majority, but Hitler became chancellor legally. Then, with Nazis in power, Hitler received huge majorities in subsequent elections, no surprise there.

In the later stages of World War II, allied bombs fell on Germany, reducing many cities to rubble. Uncounted men, women, and children were killed. Bombs fell on Nazis and anti-Nazis alike. This may have been unjust, but it was necessary for victory over Nazism. No one called it “genocide.” The word hadn’t been invented. No one believed the object was to exterminate all Germans. The object was to win the war as quickly as possible, and thereby save many civilian lives.

Bombs and bullets follow the laws of physics, not the laws of morality. Once war begins, the laws of physics take over. We must do our best to avoid war, not engage in a futile attempt to make it pretty.

• In 2005 Israel forcibly removed all Jews from Gaza. That is, Gaza was “free” – free of Jews, or judenfrei. Gazans elected Hamas to govern them. The program of Hamas violated Hitler’s copyright: Destroy Israel and kill all its Jews. Now bombs and rockets are falling on Gazans, including men, women, and children. They fall on pro-Hamas and anti-Hamas people alike. This may be unjust, but the object is victory over Hamas and its truly genocidal program. No one believes the object is to exterminate all Palestinians, yet Israel is widely accused of “genocide.”
