In 1979 President Jimmy Carter abrogated the US-Taiwan Treaty, so the US could undertake normal relations with Communist China. Sen. Barry Goldwater and others sued, claiming that if the president needed 2/3 of the Senate to make a treaty, he also needed 2/3 of the Senate to break it.

But the Supreme Court ruled 6-3 that the president could go ahead and break the treaty. (Goldwater v Carter). It would be necessary to overturn that Supreme Court decision if you wanted to prevent Trump from leaving NATO.

Note how the learned law professors and slick-haired TV gurus conveniently forget that Supreme Court precedent. Political partisans? You bet. Objective experts on the law? Not so much.
