The commanding general of the Union Army at the start of the Civil War was old Winfield Scott, the hero of the Mexican War. When he was unable to reach Richmond, the Confederate capital, Lincoln asked him: “You got to Mexico City with 5,000 men, why can’t you get to Richmond with 50,000 men?”

Scott replied, “The men who got us to Mexico City are the same men who are keeping us out of Richmond.”

Same thing in Ukraine. Putin is fighting some of the same, tough men who made up the Soviet Red Army. Though they won’t admit it, this is a civil war, the worst kind of war.
