Guilty But Insane
We need a verdict of “guilty but insane.” The offender could be confined in a locked mental institution until she is better, then transferred to a prison for the rest of her sentence.
People who are so disturbed that they murder children are too dangerous ever to be let loose on society. We used to forcibly confine patients with infectious diseases like tuberculosis and leprosy, not to punish them, but to protect all the rest of us. Same thing here.
