Maggie Williams, high school junior, sets 800-meter record wearing mask, collapses at finish line, falls on face. Says she was “super dizzy” from not being able to draw full breath, then passed out. As a result, Oregon altered mask mandate for athletes during competition.
Can anyone name one person who contracted Covid-19 while competing outdoors in any sport? No? Then where did the mask mandate come from? One need not be a sports physiologist to understand that aerobic sports like running require that athletes breathe freely. That’s why they call them aerobic.
Impaired breathing can lead to: 1)reduced oxygen, 2) increased carbon dioxide, and 3) reduced ability to lose heat, resulting in hyperthermia. Any of the three, and surely all three together, can cause impaired judgment, dizziness, clumsiness, and loss of consciousness with possible injury from falling. This represents abuse. Depending on the age of the athlete, it may be child abuse. And all this in the name of “health.”
Lesson: Following illogical, potentially dangerous orders is immoral.
