What do you see?
- Taliban terrorists terrorizing. That’s what they do. After 20 years of US intervention, and the role model of orderly democracy, the Afghans quickly revert to savagery. So let them live in whatever medieval way they please. Let them practice all the vendettas they want. But let us lose not one more American life.
- Colin Powell invoked the Pottery Barn Rule: “If you break it, you own it.” If we spent 20 years there, we must have caused some changes, and we must have influenced some people. We are responsible for those people, even if it takes another 20 years. Exiting in a disorderly way tells our friends they can’t depend on us, and tells our enemies they needn’t fear us.
Each of these viewpoints may be partially valid, but they are fundamentally incompatible. In the end we must choose. And with our government in the hands of President Biden, or whoever is pulling the strings, Number 1 has been chosen for us.
But that doesn’t mean we can avoid the consequences outlined in Number 2. Stay tuned for possible terrorist attacks. The twentieth anniversary of 9/11 is coming up.
