Suppose Britain tried to retake Kenya, or France tried to retake Algeria. They would be seen as dangerous fools trying to recreate a 19th century empire in the 21st century. That’s what Putin is doing. Granted, Ukraine is next door not overseas. But the idea is still irrational.
