Movie Set Shooting Closer To Explanation: Carelessness Squared

Report: Crew on set of “Rust” took a gun or guns from a table, which apparently was left outside unattended. During a break they were “plinking,” shooting at random targets in the nearby desert. They then returned the gun(s) without checking to be sure they had removed all live ammunition. The armorer apparently did not check the guns she had left unattended.

The assistant director then picked up a gun without checking it, and handed it to Alec Baldwin, who also did not check it. But he did point it at the camera, as the script called for, and pulled the trigger, which was definitely uncalled-for. The results:

Halyna Hutchins, cinematographer, wife and mother of 9-year-old son, dead at 42.

Joel Souza, director, recovering from gunshot wound.

Alec Baldwin, actor and producer, career ended, facing possible criminal charges.

Dave Halls, assistant director, career ended, facing possible criminal charges.

Hannah Gutierrez Reed, armorer, career ended at age 24, facing possible criminal charges.

“Rust” production company, facing multi-million-dollar lawsuit, assuming it has any assets.

“Rust” insurance company, facing multi-million-dollar lawsuit, assuming it exists.

Reputation of Hollywood for safety of actors and crew, worse than before.

Reputation of our civilization for respect for human life, worse than before.
