In the Soviet Union, the regime made announcements that few believed. But the regime didn’t care. If you believed its propaganda, well and good. But if you didn’t believe it and passively accepted it, or even parroted it, so much the better. You were admitting that you had not only sold your soul to the regime, you had sold your mind as well.

Accept the unacceptable? Tolerate the intolerable? Believe the unbelievable? Then you, too, are a good little subject of the regime. Just keep your head down and your mouth shut, and you may live to old age – if you call that living.
