China moves to fill vacuum America is leaving in Afghanistan. Not surprising, but depressing. Nature abhors a vacuum, but aggressors love one. Why couldn’t we have left a small contingent to hold Bagram, so we would always have a secure airfield in case we wanted to return?
It is said that Russians play chess while Americans play poker. So Russians think three or four moves ahead, while Americans bluff. But now we’re not even trying to bluff. We’re just throwing in our cards, on the theory that we don’t deserve to win. But this is not a friendly game. They won’t just take your money. They’ll take your house. And if you’re late paying up, they’ll send some guys to collect.
