Report: Confederate Memorial To be Removed From Arlington National Cemetery.

After the Civil War, the bloodiest in our history, people in both North and South tried to, in Lincoln’s words, bind up the wounds. Ken Burns’ classic TV series describes a reenactment by veterans. As Picket’s charge at Gettysburg is reenacted, when Confederate veterans reach the crest of Cemetery Ridge, they embrace Union veterans “with a great sigh.” Those who had suffered and lost friends could reconcile and forgive.

But now, a century and a half later, we who had not suffered or lost anything cannot forgive and remain vengeful and vindictive. What does that say about us? We confuse vengeful and vindictive with courageous and stalwart. Not the same at all.

Here are two elderly Union and Confederate veterans embracing. Surely they rank higher on the scale of mercy and forgiveness than we do. Which doesn’t say much.
