Oscar-winning director of film about the Holocaust draws lesson that it is Israel’s occupation of West Bank and Gaza that is the cause of current violence. No, just the opposite.
In 2005 the Israeli government forcibly removed every Jew from Gaza. Tens of thousands of Israeli citizens were expelled from their homes, schools, businesses, and synagogues by armed Israeli troops and relocated to Israel proper. The Gazans then chose Hamas to represent them in a free election. So they are responsible for what Hamas does.
Of course not every Gazan approves of everything Hamas does. Not every German approved of everything Hitler did. But they elected him. So when our bombs fell on Nazis and anti-Nazis alike, there was cosmic justice there. And there is cosmic justice here, too, when Israeli bombs fall on pro-Hamas and anti-Hamas Gazans alike. They elected Hamas. It was not the “occupation” that initiated the current round of violence – it was the UNoccupation. The problem only got worse when the Gazans were left to their own devices.
Perhaps there is a lesson here. If Israel UNoccupied the West Bank the way it UNoccupied Gaza, what do you suppose would happen? Would the West Bank become a peace garden where flowers are grown? To believe this you need the IQ of broccoli.
