Check Kids’ Vision And Hearing

Look at the joy on this child’s face as glasses enable normal vision. My uncle was not so lucky. As a child in Russia, he was beaten repeatedly because he failed to read. They assumed he was being disobedient. When they finally gave him glasses, he read well, and in fact became scholarly. But the pain of those beatings stayed with him into old age.
And then, of course, we have more subtle reading disorders. There is frank dyslexia, and then there are other, less obvious varieties, some of which have yet to be recognized.
Check your child’s hearing and vision – early. And if there is a reading problem, consult an expert. Have we really progressed much since my uncle’s time? We no longer beat kids who have reading problems, but we punish them in other ways that are less violent but no less painful.
