The Enforcer

The enforcer is a sports term used to describe a player who is tough enough and willing enough to take on opposing players who rough up a team mate. Many of us were wondering why the Indiana Fever did not have an enforcer to protect their leading scorer Caitlin Clark. Two pokes in the eye, one ruptured ear drum, and too many tackles to the floor to count. Add to this referees who were either visually impaired, or downright biased against Clark.

Well, we can stop wondering. Now they have an enforcer. Sophie Cunningham is 6’1″ tall, weighs 165 pounds, and has a black belt in taekwondo. More importantly, she has loyalty to her team mates. We were hoping Clark would get some protection. Now it appears that she will.

I used to know a young woman who put herself through the university on a basketball scholarship. I remarked, “Basketball is supposed to be a non-contact sport.”

She replied, “It isn’t.”

On the basketball court, and in the world, standing up for your friends and standing up against your enemies is the only way to succeed, or even to survive. As the situation with Iran unfolds, we should keep this in mind.
