To paraphrase Gilbert and Sullivan, if everyone is a Nazi, then no one is. The end result of seeing Nazis everywhere is to trivialize Nazism: “If Sydney Sweeney is a Nazi, how bad could Nazis really be? Perhaps the Holocaust deniers are right.”

That is why finding Nazism in a jeans ad is so destructive. It’s not that anyone with an IQ above that of broccoli actually believes such nonsense. It’s that the whole discussion trivializes this vital topic. Nazism is not a subject for humor. There are still people walking around with numbers tattooed on their arms. They wouldn’t find this the least bit amusing.
