“Police Make Me Nervous”

Washington, D.C. restaurants report a marked increase in business, now that people are no longer afraid to go out at night, or even during the day. Reservations are now difficult to get. The presence of police and National Guard troops makes people feel safe.

Correction: Police and National Guard make most people feel safe. But they make leftists nervous. Why? Are they afraid someone may be able to read their violent thoughts? But let us leave an explanation to psychiatrists, and merely admit that leftists feel nervous because of police, but paradoxically, they do not feel nervous because of violent street crime.

The same thing happened in Los Angeles some time ago. An area with fine restaurants was plagued with violent street crime, including homicides. The restaurants considered closing because of declining business. Patrons felt that a good meal was not worth their lives.

As a result, the LAPD instituted a mounted patrol. Officers on horseback patrolled during peak hours. Crime decreased, and restaurant business increased. Diners were happy, and restaurateurs were happy. But leftists were unhappy. They complained to the L.A. Times that mounted police looked like Border Patrol, as if that were an insult.

A blogger retorted that mounted officers also looked like King Charles’ Life Guards, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and the sheriff in Western movies. But so what? They made people safer. Isn’t that the point?

Yes, Washington residents are safer. But some people are impossible to please. Or rather, they are pleased by chaos. Avoid these people. They are annoying at best, and dangerous at worst.
