Using AI In Therapy? What Next?
Therapists are increasingly using AI such as Chat in therapy. Not just to aid in therapy, but to conduct it.
In one case, the therapist accidentally revealed his laptop screen in a Zoom session. The client saw the next question would be, “Do you get too black-and-white in your thinking?” So the client stepped in first with, “Maybe I get too black-and-white in my thinking.” The therapist, blissfully unaware of what was happening, exclaimed, “Exactly!”
So a cynic might ask, which is worse? AI mimicking a human being, or a therapist mimicking a human being? Soon online AI therapy will put many therapists out of business. I believe this will be a bad thing. But what I believe makes no difference. It’s coming.
But what will you do if you have a serious problem, and this happens?

On the other hand, AI won’t abandon you without warning because you voted for Trump. Which is what an ostensibly human therapist did to someone I know. Maybe giving people a choice between AI and human therapists is a good compromise.
