Why Can’t Putin Take Kiiv?

The first commanding general of the Union Army in the Civil War was the elderly Winfield Scott, hero of the Mexican War. Lincoln asked him why, if he got to Mexico City with 5,000 men, he could not get to Richmond with 50,000 men.

Scott replied, “The men who got us into Mexico City are the same men who are keeping us out of Richmond.” Then as now, many of our military were Southerners.

Could the same problem be affecting Putin? The Ukrainians who are keeping Putin out of Kiiv are some of the same men who made the Soviet Union’s army so strong. Civil wars are notoriously difficult and bloody. That’s why they should be avoided whenever possible.
