Cambridge Study Argues That Authoritarianism May Be Required to Fight Climate Change
For almost 2 years, we have endured lockdowns, mask mandates, vaccine mandates, business closures, job losses, banned family gatherings, churches closed while bars and casinos open – all to avoid the “existential threat” of Covid-19. Now we are at the stage of a second booster, and “fully vaxxed” replaced by “up to date.” That is an admission that there will be no end to moving the goalposts, that is, unless we put an end to it.
I thought that the Jan. 6 “insurrection” and “White supremacy” would be the next “existential threat” to justify oppressive, arbitrary regulations that further shrink our freedom. This may happen. But looming down the road is climate change. And sure enough, the geniuses at Cambridge predict that authoritarianism will be needed to combat it.
Can you imagine any problem that progressives would not declare required a tyrannical regime to combat it? Can you conceive of any crisis that leftists would not prescribe loss of freedom as a remedy? You can’t? Neither can I.
Perhaps there is a lesson here. Perhaps oppressive regulations are not created to meet crises. Perhaps crises are created to justify oppressive regulations. Worth a thought?
