Victor Davis Hanson points out a fatal flaw in progressivism: Abolition of consequences. Looters steal armloads of stuff from stores while owners and security guards watch helplessly. China eats our lunch economically while government officials and sports stars profit.
But there are consequences. If the looters don’t pay them, store owners and customers will. If the China profiteers don’t pay them, all the rest of us will. That’s how the universe works. When bills come due, someone must pay. This is exemplified by the old joke: It was so cold I saw a socialist with his hands in his own pockets.
