Protecting Children…From Parents?

Among the spam emails that clog my laptop is an unsolicited weekly message from the California attorney general. This week’s message includes:

  • In addition to infringing upon student privacy, forced “outing” of students to their parents is very likely to result in significant emotional, mental, and even physical harm and subject students to discriminatory harassment.

In short, WE not parents are in charge of children. WE not parents have the wisdom to know what is best for them. WE not parents have the right to approve puberty blockers and hormone treatments that produce lifelong effects including infertility, deepening of female voice, and beard growth in girls. In fact, parents may push their children to self-harm, even suicide, but WE never will do so. You see, parents may act by authority of the Almighty, but WE act by authority of the almighty state. File under H for Hubris. Cross-file under F for Family, nuclear, destroy.

The protection of every student’s privacy and safety is of utmost importance, and that includes protecting their right to choose when, how, and with whom they share their gender identity. That is a personal decision for them, and them alone. This week we informed the Chino Valley Unified School District that by passing a policy requiring the disclosure of a student’s gender identity without their consent, the district strips them of their freedom, violates their autonomy, and could potentially put the student in a harmful situation.
