NYC health officials urge everyone to carry naloxone, the drug thatcounteracts opioids and can reverse opioid overdoses. Wait, overdoses are that common? Drug deaths are that frequent? Everyone needs to carry the antidote?
Do you think, just possibly, that this is a sign something is seriously wrong? Do you imagine, just conceivably, that something definitive needs to be done? A few years ago, the Philippines were wracked by drug addiction and overdoses. President Duterte, no fan of judicial restraint, took action. Over 1000 drug dealers and users were taken our and shot. Is this what we want here?
To paraphrase President John F. Kennedy: Those who make peaceful change impossible make violent change inevitable.
At some point – which cannot be predicted but will be obvious only in retrospect – one more middle school student will die of a pain pill contaminated with fentanyl. And that one death will be one too many. Then people will vote in an authoritarian regime that will alleviate the drug problem while destroying our freedom.
Please, do something before that happens.
