In free countries, they hold a trial, then they find you guilty or not guilty. In unfree countries, they find you guilty, then they hold a trial. For example, the judge issued a summary judgment finding Trump guilty of fraud for “overvaluing” Mar-a-Lago, then set a trial to determine the damages. Constitutional guarantee of jury trial? Out the window.

In free countries, the judge is impartial, or at least pretends to be. In unfree countries, the judge is open about his bias. Foe example, the Trump judge is a major Democrat donor. He responded to a Trump  lawyer’s argument by saying “That’s ridiculous!” and pounding  his hand on the desk, making  it clear what verdict he expects from the jury. Those in power feel no need to be subtle.

During the Vietnam War, a US officer was said to have commented, “We had to destroy the village in order to save it.” These people are saying, “We have to destroy our judicial system in order to get Trump.” But do they have to smile while they do it?
