In short, it is now acceptable to claim that Jewish doctors may harm patients and should be investigated. And a faculty member who makes that anti-Semitic claim need not be investigated and can continue to influence and evaluate medical students. As Yogi Berra said, it’s déjà vu all over again.

My family members were in Vienna in the 1930s. The Austrian Nazi Party was growing stronger. Hitler was Austrian, after all. The University of Vienna was beset by roving Nazis, with swastika armbands, who felt free to beat up Jewish students. Jewish professors and students at the General Hospital were nervous – they were soon to be expelled. And then things got worse. Will things get worse here, too? They will, unless we work at it.
