Report: Los Angeles dognappers steal French bulldog from owner’s hands. When she stands in front of car, they don’t stop. She goes for ride on hood of car, hanging onto windshield wipers, but finally falls off, bruised and cut.

Analysis: Theft of an article less than $950 is a misdemeanor in California. But this could still get you a year in jail and a $1000 fine – if we had a DA in Los Angeles who was interested in doing his job. But a French Bulldog is probably worth more, a felony.

If you tie your dog up outside a store and I take him, that’s theft. But if I overcome your resistance by yanking the leash out of your hand, that’s strong-arm robbery. If I take your dog for a ride, that’s dognapping. But if I take you for a ride, that’s kidnapping. If you are bruised and cut, that’s kidnapping with bodily harm. And if I hit you with my car, that’s assault with a deadly weapon. These model citizens deserve many years in prison. But even if they are caught, we’ll be lucky if they serve any time at all.

Prediction: Either (a) we elect an actual DA, not a charade pretending to be a DA enough to fool the voters, or (b) enough law-abiding citizens will carry guns so that robbing people on the street will no longer look like an attractive way to make money. The current state of chaos is too unstable to continue. You want my dog? Come and take her.
