Fads And Quackery In Health Care

First a brief history lesson:

• Since prehistoric times, wounds were treated with red-hot pokers or boiling oil. Then in the 1500s French surgeon Ambroise Paré ran out of hot oil, and discovered that wounds healed faster and with much less pain with dry cloth dressings.
• From ancient times until the 1800s, wounds and diseases were treated with bleeding. When Washington fell ill, probably of a throat infection, the doctors bled him. He got worse. Did they conclude bleeding didn’t work and try something else? No, they concluded they hadn’t bled him enough and bled him more until he died. He was 67.
• From ancient Egypt until the 1950s, enemas were used for a variety of ailments including hyperactivity in children. Then ADHD was discovered and enemas were restricted to where they belonged, severe constipation.
What is the lesson here? Doctors are as subject to fads as are women’s fashion designers. I believe that in a few years, puberty blockers, removing healthy breasts, and castration will take their place as destructive fads of the past, along side hot pokers, bleeding, and enemas. May that day come soon.
