Report: “Mexico says it won’t accept immigrants back to its territory from Texas ‘under any circumstances.’”
Question: At what point is a one-way immigration valve at the Mexican border not merely unfair or unequal, but a hostile act? At what point are we allowed to view large crowds of unknown people crossing our border illegally while waving the flags of foreign countries as an invasion? At any point at all?
I don’t know what my forebears were carrying when they arrived at Ellis Island. But I do know what they were not carrying: Russian flags. They wanted to get away from the czar’s oppression; they surely didn’t want to bring it with them to their new homeland.

And that’s the point. They knew they were arriving in their new homeland. They wanted their children to speak good English and become good Americans. They would have thought anyone waving a czarist or other foreign flag was crazy. Times have changed, haven’t they?
