It is a cliché that the Jews are the canary in the coal mine, that they may be the first to be persecuted but never the last. But the reason something becomes a cliché is that it is generally true. Take Canada. Canadian universities and schools were never known to be remarkably pro-Jewish or pro-Israel. Still, things have gotten worse.

Read this student’s report. Then tell me I’m wrong. Tell me a Jewish student should feel safe and at home in a Canadian university today. Then tell me any Canadian should feel secure in their liberties. Prime Minister attacked the truckers for their anti-vaccine protest by freezing their bank accounts. Their families couldn’t pay the rent or buy food.

Forget that the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms is relatively recent, even an afterthought, unlike our Constitution. Go all the way back to 1215 and Magna Carta. Even King John couldn’t get away with seizing people’s property without due process, or any process at all. Forget that, except for the truckers, most Canadians acquiesced, sheeplike, to vaccine and lockdown orders. They stood by silent, when a pastor was forced to kneel in the street in the rain, as he was arrested for holding a church service during the lockdown.

But no more. The glory has departed. We’re next. You doubt that? Just stand by idly, do nothing, and you’ll see. That’s the bad news. The good news is that I’ll be able to say “I told you so” as they lead both of us away.
