Shoplifting is concealing an object under your jacket and sneaking out with it. What we are talking about here is grabbing armloads of stuff and openly walking out with it, brushing aside the owner or clerk. Depending the force involved, this may be strong-arm robbery, a felony. And if done by a group, it is looting, also a felony that can get you 3 years in prison and counts as a “strike”– of which the third gets you 25-to-life.
Yes, prosecutors do have the tools. They just refuse to use them. They allow the streets to become unsafe and businesses to become unprofitable. So now even the most leftist of states is revolting, in both senses of that word. At some point, which may come sooner that we think, people will take matters into their own hands and greet looters with the help of Colonel Colt, whose hospitality is unquestioned.
