Medical Students: Science Nerds Or Bureaucratic Sheep?

By | April 10, 2024 | 0 Comments

When I was a med student years ago, some of my classmates planned to work for Kaiser or other health care organizations, but most looked forward to opening their own offices. Now, this is reversed. Most med students plan to work for insurance companies or the government, and only a minority look forward to having their own practices.

But wait. Are these the same kind of people? Are they the same science nerds, who simply have different plans? Or were my classmates fundamentally different people? Many were veterans. Were we typical Americans, independent, self-reliant, able to think for ourselves, able to look at a government cookbook and say, “No, I don’t think I’ll do it that way”?

And are the current med students good little subjects of an authoritarian government? They obey a leader they never chose, and on command chant to the Earth Goddess and repeat whatever they are told. “Free Palestine!” Meaning, “Get rid of the Jews.” Why not? Don’t cause trouble. Just say it. How can they treat Jewish patients? The same way their forebears treated Black patients: minimally, without empathy or dedication, not really caring if they live or die.

I wish you good luck and good health. With those good little bureaucratic sheep as your doctors, you’ll need both.
