When you’re sliding downhill, you seek something to grab hold of. Whether it’s a beautiful spray of flowers or a plain clump of weeds does not really matter. All that matters is that it is strong enough to sustain you. And if it is, you’re in luck. Your slide downhill will be stopped. You will be able to begin your climb back uphill. That’s what religion can be. That is, if we have not yet succeeded in driving it totally out of the public square.
