$20 An Hour, If You Had A Job

Because of California’s new law mandating a $20 an hour minimum wage for fast-food restaurant workers, about 10,000 jobs have disappeared. We call this the law of unintended consequences, but I’m not so sure.

Economists and small-business owners repeatedly warned that $20 an hour was more that many small businesses could afford. They warned that they would have to lay off workers, replace them with AI, or close entirely. But Democrat state officials – in California that’s all state officials – ignored the warnings.

So I’m not sure that the increased unemployment was unintended. The workers lucky enough to keep their jobs were grateful to Democrats for their increased wages. And those unlucky enough to lose their jobs blamed their employers for firing them, or for closing permanently. And they were grateful to Democrats for unemployment benefits. And so it goes.

Democrats cast themselves in the role of friend of working people. Someday we may realize that they were badly miscast, sort of like casting Nancy Pelosi in the lead role of “The Life of Mother Teresa.”
