Sometimes, when dealing with a disturbed patient, psychologists and psychiatrists find it helpful to “join” with the patient. For example, if his delusion is that the government is reading his thoughts, the therapist agrees that this is terribly upsetting as well as illegal.
But in everyday life, and especially in politics, we do not “join” in the irrational beliefs of others. When Democrats claim that inflation will ease if we do more of the profligate spending that caused it in the first place, we can disagree strongly. And when they claim that Biden’s pitiful debate performance shows that Trump should drop out of the race, we can reply “You’re crazy!” perhaps spiced with a few choice expletives.
We are not therapists. Democrats are not our patients. We have no obligation to make them feel good by “joining” in their destructive delusions. And I’ve just about had it with the whole confused mess.
Spend less. Restore the value of the dollar. Restore respect for the government. Regain the trust of our armed forces. Use the FBI to fight criminals and terrorists, not Republicans. Let the Border Patrol control our borders, not the cartels. It’s simple. Not easy. But simple.
