When we talk about a veneer, we usually mean a thin layer of fine wood overlaid on cheaper wood to make it seem better than it really is. By extension, we mean low-life people pretending to be righteous, ignorant people pretending to be educated, or the like.

But did you ever think that a veneer might work the other way as well? Did you think that a person might pretend to be irreligious to be promoted or get along at work, yet be a person of faith? Did you think that a person might claim to have socialist views to keep being invited to cocktail parties, yet be a staunch conservative?

I believe there are many Americans, perhaps millions, who wear those reverse veneers. I believe that air traffic controller is the rule, not the exception. I believe I will be shown to be correct this November, assuming actual votes will be counted. Stay tuned.
