But you get the idea. If neither friends nor enemies can rely on what she says, how can we remain safe in a dangerous world? If agreements with the United States are written in disappearing ink, who would rely on such agreements? Who would even bother to make them?

A door that swings both ways can cause embarrassing accidents in a restaurant kitchen. A leader of a great nation who flip-flops incessantly can cause a world-wide cataclysm.
