In the original “Godfather” film, Don Corleone meets with other mafia bosses to achieve peace. But he warns them that if an “accident” befalls his youngest son Michael, if a lightning bolt strikes him, “that I do not forgive.” The Godfather gives a clear warning about what not to do. We should follow his example. That way, no one can say they didn’t understand the consequences of their actions.

• Trump comes within centimeters of death in his Pennsylvania rally as a rifle bullet grazes his right ear. The Secret Service could not be bothered to cover a roof with a direct line of sight to the podium. How could this happen?

• A would-be assassin with a scoped rifle is allowed to get within range at a golf course. How did he know which course Trump would play, and where the vulnerable spots were? Mere observation would not tell him.

While we wait impatiently for answers to these crucially important questions, let us ask some others, which are less crucial but no less important to our humanity.

• WNBA rookie of the year Caitlin Clark is hit on the side of the head hard enough to rupture her eardrum. Blood is visible in her left ear canal, but no foul is called, and the commentator states that she did not see contact. They assumed Clark was “flopping,” feigning injury. But no apologies to Clark or to her team when the truth is publicized.

• Clark poked in left eye by long false fingernail. Scratch on eyelid is visible as eye blackens. Again, no foul is called, though injury is clearly visible. Clark scores well for an ordinary rookie, but poorly for her. Shocking news: It takes two eyes to shoot well. Again, no apologies to Clark or to her team. They might have lost anyhow, but who can say for sure?

To follow the Godfather’s example, let us be crystal clear: If Donald J. Trump is killed or disabled, or if Caitlin Clark suffers a career-ending or otherwise disabling injury, that we will not forgive. And you really don’t want to find out how we will express our displeasure.
