What Am I Watching?

I’m not much of a women’s basketball fan, but I thought I was watching the playoffs. Then I saw this obvious false fingernail poke in Caitlin Clark’s eye. Unexpectedly, or perhaps expectedly, the referee was close by but did not call a foul, much less a flagrant foul and eject the poker.

Later photos showed a clear scratch on the upper eyelid and a blackening eye. Fortunately, no permanent damage was done, although I have not heard anything about a thorough exam by an ophthalmologist. Clark is 22. Her eyes have to last at least 60 years. So do her ears, despite a ruptured eardrum from a blow to the head. If the physical health of the players is not the league’s first responsibility, then whose responsibility is it?

But my first thought was, what am I watching? This can’t be basketball. It can’t be MMA, either. A move like that would get you booted out quicker than Prince Harry getting the bum’s rush from Buckingham Palace. Then I realized what I was watching. It was a commercial for an instructional video: “How To End A Street Fight In Three Seconds.”

I might consider ordering the video. But I won’t be watching the WNBA any more. Too violent. MMA and rugby are more to my taste.
