“Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, wearing Harris hat, drew double-takes on social media Thursday over a video in which she feeds a tortilla chip to a kneeling feminist influencer, a head-scratching scene that prompted accusations of spoofing the Eucharist.”
No, not “spoofing,” mocking. Understandably, Catholics are most resentful. But Protestant denominations that use Communion are equally insulted. The history of Nazi Germany shows that mockery and ridicule are preludes to persecution, and worse.
We have been warned, in the most costly way. If we do not heed these warnings and react strongly, we will have no one to blame but ourselves when both Christians and Jews are plunged into the darkness of persecution.
What’s that you say? “It can’t happen here.” That’s exactly what my parents’ friends in Austria and Poland told them in the 1930s. Well, it did happen there. Are you willing to bet your lives and souls, and those of your children and grandchildren, that it can’t happen here? It can, unless we prevent it.
Mocking the Eucharist? What’s next? Desecrating a Torah scroll? It would not be the first time that happened. Buckle your seat belt. Things may get bumpy. Those dark clouds look threatening. And those at the controls of our aircraft may not have our best interests at heart.
