Almost everyone predicted that President Truman would be defeated for reelection. The Chicago Tribune even printed an edition with that headline. But Truman won, and held up the paper triumphantly. He added, “They had to eat so much crow that we were afraid the species would go extinct.” Harry was not exactly eloquent, but he had a folksy way with words.
