Europe’s Chief Rabbis Condemn Pope’s Accusation Of Genocide

Many of Europe’s leading rabbis condemn Pope Francis’ accusation that Israel has been committing genocide against Palestinians. But what is genocide? A war you disagree with, because you feel Jews have no right to defend themselves? Violence you decry, because you feel they should be good little Jews and, sheep-like, meekly line up to climb onto boxcars like they did last time? Last time, when you did little to save them?

There are more Palestinians now than there were when Israel was reestablished in 1948. It that is genocide, it is the most ineffective genocide in world history. When Hitler committed suicide in 1945, 80% of all the Jews of Europe had been been murdered. That was genocide. And so was the massacre of Armenians by Turks.

But Palestinians? Not really.

When people throw the term genocide around where it does not belong, they not only besmirch the name of those they dislike. Even worse, they trivialize the very concept of genocide. They belittle the idea of mass murder. They make light of the Holocaust. They trivialize Nazism to the point that it becomes merely a way of saying you don’t like that guy. They minimize anti-Semitism to the point that it reveals actual anti-Semitism. And after all that Europeans have done to the Jews over the centuries, this is a terrible sin.

I do not presume to speak for the Almighty. But as for me, that I will not forgive.
