Today the mail brought my UCSF Magazine. It contains alumni information and scientific articles. But look at the cover. What do you see? I see the advance of medical science over the centuries. But I also see racism. We see primitive individuals, then a nurse and a doctor, both apparently White. And finally, at the peak of evolution, we see a Black female doctor.

What is wrong with that? Let me tell you. In my lifetime, one-third of all the Jews on Earth were murdered by racists. The Nazis had a racial pyramid, with the Jews at the bottom. Yes, Black people were discriminated against, both here and abroad. But does this justify depicting people who might be Jews as below the top of the evolutionary pyramid? No, it does not.

That I will not tolerate, even if it comes in my alumni magazine. Especially if it comes in my alumni magazine. When science becomes infected with racism, even to a small degree, even in a subtle way, we are all in deep trouble.
