Outrage as a 90-year-old man is abandoned by a caretaker during the Pacific Palisades fire. Listen to radio call for an RA, rescue ambulance. In New York they call it a “bus,” in Chicago an “ambo,” and in Los Angeles an “RA.” But that’s whom you call when a civilian caregiver runs away.

Do I blame the caregiver for saving his or her own life from burning to death? No, I can’t. I’ve never been in that situation myself, so I’m not sure how I would act. That is why we depend on professionals, who have the training and are bound by an oath. And that is why this firefighter’s callous response is so reprehensible. She can’t carry a man out of a fire, but he got himself into it?

The Los Angeles fire disaster gives a reason to stop and think. Where are we? Is this where we want to be? Is this who we want to be? Do the ideals we are following lead to a kinder, safer world, or to just the opposite?
