What Hope Is There For Compromise?

MSNBC commentators Nicolle Wallace and Rachel Maddow make derogatory comments about 13-year-old Black young man who overcame brain cancer and wants to be a cop. Trump appointed him an honorary Secret Service agent at the State of the Union address. But this was too much for Wallace and Maddow.

It was also too much for congressional Democrats. During the presentation to the young man, they sat on their hands stone-faced, as they did during other nonpartisan portions of the address. Traditionally, members of the opposition party applaud tepidly for nonpartisan statements. But not now.

This raises the question: If there is nothing, literally nothing, a president of the opposing party can say that merits at least lukewarm applause,  or even a feeble smile, what hope is there for agreement on vitally important issues? In child-rearing, this is called a tantrum in the No stage. In psychoanalysis, it might be called the anal-expulsive stage. But in politics, we aren’t quite sure what to call it. It resembles putting a moving car in Park. Serious damage results, the car comes to a jerky stop, and you will be lucky if it moves forward again.

These people live in upscale suburbs and gated communities. They can’t imagine why an African American young man might aspire to be a cop, even a Secret Service agent. They believe African American young men aspire to be corner boys, even the neighborhood drug dealer. And they have the colossal gall to pose as friends of the minority community.

Can’t applaud a 13-year-old cancer survivor? Who wants to compromise with them, even if it were possible? This is not the Democratic Party of Franklin Roosevelt and John Kennedy. It is the Democratic Party of Orval Faubus and Bull Connor. Who wants to compromise with them?
